June 18-21, 2013
Surfing is one of the many reasons vacationers flock to the Baja Peninsula and Pacific coast cities like Ensenada. Novices to world-class surfers love the wave action off the coast of Baja California and Baja California Sur. The upcoming Surf Week Celebration in Ensenada is held from June 18-21, 2013 and will feature activities and, of course, surfing in honor of International Surfing Day June 20th. The International Surfing date varies from year to year but is always celebrated around the summer solstice. Anyone with a penchant for surfing might want to consider checking out Ensenada’s exciting celebration this year.
Ensenada’s Surf Week Celebration
Many activities and events are scheduled as part of the surfing celebration. The celebration is sponsored by Surf-Ens and CEARTE. Each day of the celebration will feature workshops and conferences related to surfing as well as surf industry expeditions. It’s a great time for surfers to meet with vendors and other surfers to trade techniques and stories. Amateur surfing enthusiasts can also sign up for surfing lessons which are offered during the celebration days. Additionally, surfing movies will also be shown. Most of the events and expeditions will be held at Centro Estatal de las Artes Ensenada on Blvd. Lázaro Cárdenas and Av. Club Rotario. On Saturday, a big fiesta is scheduled to top off the celebration. All in all, the event highlights the importance of surfing in Ensenada and celebrates the city’s surfing culture. It’s a phenomenal time to visit Ensenada if you love to surf and want to learn more about the sport.
The Surfing Scene in Ensenada
Ensenada enjoys a rich surfing culture. With its nearby “Killers” beach known more regularly to tourists as Todos Santos, surfers have been heading to the area since roughly about the 1940s. Ensenada is a great home base for surfers who want to check out the action at various beaches. The city boasts a myriad of surf shops where surf boards can be rented and other items like sunscreen can be purchased. The waters off the Baja Peninsula get colder as you head south. This is due to the currents and underwater canyons that contribute to the cool water climate. The water is much colder than the waters off Southern California, for instance, so expert surfers suggest packing your suit if you plan to head south of Ensenada.
Ensenada’s beaches attract travelers from all over the world. There are luxury hotels and villas and simple hostels that are economical and provide basic amenities. In short, there are plenty of accommodations to suit any budget. Surfers, naturally, love to stay near the water and there are campgrounds and RV parks as well as world-class resorts to consider. With its gorgeous scenery and unsurpassed sunrises and sunsets over the Pacific, Ensenada’s beaches are famous throughout the world. There are also plenty of other water sports to enjoy like sailing, scuba, and snorkeling. If you happen to be planning a weekend getaway, the Ensenada Surf Week Celebration is a wonderful time to visit this summer. You’ll meet plenty of other surfing enthusiasts and enjoy all the attractions that Ensenada has to offer!
